Langjökull — "Long Glacier" in Icelandic — covers 935 square kilometres of West Iceland's highlands, its ice sheet reaching thicknesses of 580 metres in places. The glacier sits atop an active volcanic system, with geothermal heat carving subglacial rivers and moulins into the ice from below.
During the Medieval Warm Period, Langjökull retreated to roughly half its current extent; the Little Ice Age expansion that followed reached its maximum around 1850. Since then, the glacier has lost approximately 10 per cent of its volume, with acceleration noted after 2000.
Snowmobile access to Langjökull's plateau began in the 1990s, following the construction of highland F-roads connecting Húsafell and the Gullfoss waterfall to the glacier's western edge. The designated snowmobile zone lies between 1,200 and 1,400 metres elevation, above the crevasse-prone lower reaches where the ice meets bedrock. Operators traverse a network of GPS-marked trails across the névé — the upper compacted snow layer that feeds the glacier below. Visibility conditions change rapidly; summer fog banks roll in from the south, while winter katabatic winds can reduce visual range to less than 50 metres within minutes.
The glacier feeds several of Iceland's major rivers, including Hvítá, which carves the two-tiered cascade at Gullfoss eight kilometres to the southeast. Meltwater from Langjökull also supplies the Þjórsá, Iceland's longest river, which flows 230 kilometres to the Atlantic. In 2015, engineers completed a 5.5-kilometre tunnel network beneath the glacier's southern margin, allowing visitors to walk through man-made ice corridors 30 metres below the surface — the first such structure excavated into a living glacier.
An Iceland snowmobile tour from Reykjavik typically departs the capital before dawn, covering 130 kilometres of Ring Road and highland track to reach the glacier's access points near Gullfoss or Húsafell. The ride itself spans 45 to 90 minutes of guided travel across the plateau, depending on route and snow depth. Operators provide insulated coveralls rated to minus 20 degrees Celsius, as wind chill at elevation often drops effective temperatures 15 degrees below ambient readings. Most tours combine the glacier crossing with stops at Þingvellir National Park, where the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates diverge at a rate of 2.5 centimetres per year, and the Geysir geothermal field, home to Strokkur geyser's six-minute eruption cycle.
